Georgetown's Greg Monroe to Return to School, Spurns 2009 NBA Draft

Georgetown forward Greg Monroe announced that he will not enter the 2009 NBA Draft and will return to school for his sophomore year, according to reports Wednesday.

The 6-foot-10 freshman forward was expected to be a top five to lottery pick in the 2009 NBA Draft, according to several mock draft services. Monroe has maintained his interest in staying in school all season.

“I laugh at that every time I see it,” he said to The Hoya after the Big East tournament. "Just, I don’t know what I’m doing, but you can’t be mad at that. I’m just getting prepared for next year, here, and I’ll worry about that later in life. I’m just worried about getting ready for next year.”

Monroe, who was the nation's No. 1 recruit coming out of high school, met expectations, ranking second on the Hoyas in scoring (12.7 per game) and led the team in rebounding average at 6.5 as a freshman. He also led the team in blocks (1.5), steals (1.9) and was second in assists (2.5).

Monroe was named the Big East Rookie of the Year and the All-Freshman First Team, according to Rivals.com.

Georgetown was ranked as high as No. 9 in the AP Top 25 before losing 12 of its last 16 games to finish 16-15. The Hoyas lost to Baylor in the first round of the National Invitational Tournament.

Monroe would have become the second Hoya to declare early for the draft. Junior forward DaJuan Summers declared for the 2009 NBA Draft two weeks ago.

Georgetown also announced Wednesday that sophomore guard Omar Wattad will transfer. He is the third Hoyas basketball player in the past two years to leave for another school.
