Funeral for Sandra Cantu Held Thursday

Dozens of close friends and family gathered Thursday at Fry Memorial Chapel for a private funeral for Sandra Cantu, the 8-year-old California child kidnapped and murdered last month.

After a “very emotional” funeral service, Cantu’s casket was transported in a horse-drawn carriage to Tracy Mausoleum.

“The police department presided. Angie, the family spokesperson, read a poem that she had written. There was a video presentation and a slide show that reviewed Sandra's life. It was very emotional,” said Tracy police Sgt. Tony Sheneman. “This was one step towards the heeling process. Every parent's nightmare is out living your child. It would be difficult over the course of the next several years because this will be replayed over and over again during the trial process but this is one step.”

Cantu was buried a day after the woman arrested in her murder was arraigned. On Wednesday, Sunday school teacher Melissa Huckaby was arraigned on charges of kidnapping, murder and rape with a foreign object.

No details on why Huckaby, whose 5-year-old daughter often played with Cantu, may have murdered the child.

Cantu’s body was found stuffed in a suitcase in an irrigation pond last week. She disappeared from the mobile home park where she lived with her mother on March 27. Cantu went to play with a friend who lived several houses down, but never returned home.
