SuperCamp Learns Valuable Life Skills from Summer Camp Conference
During the first week in April, staff members from SuperCamp, an academic summer program for kids and teens, attended a three-day American Camping Association (ACA) Conference to discuss and learn ways in which to become a more successful summer camp program, as well as to build relationships with other camps from across the country.
Included within the conference was a course on the Modeling and Teaching of Courage - The Six Behaviors of Moral Courage, with speaker Gus Lee. “The most important thing a camper can learn from camp is courage. We can not only help them to be good, but to be an owner of moral courage,” says Katie Terrill, SuperCamp’s Logistics Coordinator. This ideal compliments SuperCamp’s 8 Keys of Excellence, a powerful framework for life success which includes the concept of Integrity. “Courage plus integrity equals character,” says Terrill. In addition to Integrity, the 8 Keys of Excellence include Failure Leads to Success, Speak with Good Purpose, This Is It, Commitment, Ownership, Flexibility, and Balance. These eight fundamentals coincide to create the foundation of SuperCamp's life skills curriculum. SuperCamp’s representatives received a new understanding that courage helps students make good life choices to help them ensure that they are living with elevated goals and standards.
While at the Conference, SuperCamp’s representatives also learned about the differences between “Good People,” and “Courageous People.” “Good people are honest, honorable, ethical and lawful, but avoid personal wrongs and labeling wrongs in others,” says Terrill. “Courageous people have courage and integrity that define their character.”
On the final day of the conference, SuperCamp’s attendees learned better ways in which to communicate with parents. They were taught practical skills in communication, behaviors, and thought patterns to develop more paths to successful relationships between staff and parents. Also learned were the benefits of blogging and how new computer media such as Twitter and Facebook can help parents feel connected to their teen while they are away. With the advent of blogging, parents will have the opportunity to get live posts from staff members who can attest to the success and progress their child is making.
SuperCamp is a residential summer enrichment program that teaches academic and life skills to students age 11-18. In 2009, its 28th summer, SuperCamp will be hosted on seven college campus across the country, including Stanford University, Cornell University, and Wake Forest University.
