Assassination Plot on Bolivia’s President Evo Morales Thwarted, Three Killed by Police

Police in Bolivia have killed three alleged mercenaries and arrested two more after President Evo Morales revealed the men had been involved in an assassination plot to kill him as well as Vice President Alvaro Garcia Linera and a cabinet member.

According to Morales an intelligence report indicated that a foreign group had been plotting to carry out the assassination so he ordered a preemptive strike by the police. That strike took place during 30-minute shootout at a hotel in Santa Cruz, about 600 miles east of La Paz.

Police say that the alleged plotters attacked them as they approached but security forces managed to gain the upper-hand after about half an hour. Following the shoot-out police said they discovered documents about the assassination plot.

Two more associated with the assassination plot were arrested but the nationalities have not been released. Some reports have suggested the mercenaries were from Hungary, Romania and Ireland while police have indicated there were Bolivians involved in the plot as well.
