DeMarcus Cousins, the five-star high school basketball prospect from Alabama, has officially committed to Kentucky, according to UK head coach John Calipari.
Cousins signed and faxed his letter-of-intent to the University of Kentucky on Thursday, according to reports. Cousins had originally committed to the Memphis Tigers, but decided to follow Calipari, who left Memphis for the Wildcats last week.
Cousins, a 6-foot-9 forward at LeFlore High School in Mobile, AL, is rated as the top power forward in the country and No. 2 prospect overall according to Rivals.com.
Cousins averaged 26 points and 12 rebounds as a senior, earning Parade All-American honors as he led the LeFlore Rattlers (29-3) to a berth in the Class 5A state semifinals. He played in the McDonald's All-American Game in Miami earlier this month, as well as the Nike Hoops Summit in Portland last week as a member of the 2009 USA Junior National Select Team.
Cousins joins Kentucky "Mr. Basketball" Jon Hood (Madisonville, KY) and Daniel Orton (Oklahoma City, OK) as members of UK's 2009 signing class.
Memphis recruit Xavier Henry is still deciding between upholding his letter-of-intent to Memphis or committing to the Kansas Jayhawks. Although Henry signed a letter-of-intent, his letter featured a clause that said that he could leave if Calipari left. Henry's older brother C.J. attends Memphis and redshirted this past season.
Henry, the nation's No. 1 recruit according to Rivals.com, is deciding between Kentucky, Memphis and Kansas, the school his brother originally committed to and his parents' alma mater.
The late signing period runs from April 15 through May 20.
