Cycling champ Tyler Hamilton admitted Friday that he has
tested positive for a banned substance. Hamilton, who won the 2004 gold medal
in cycling, announced his retirement from the sport.
Hamilton, who served a 2 year ban after testing positive
for blood doping in 2004, says he knowingly took DHEA to battle his depression.
The 38-year-old said he took the over-the-counter dietary supplement before the
Tour of California in February to fight his clinical depression, which he was diagnosed
with in 2003.
DHEA is on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s banned list. The
supplement converts to a steroid once it hits the bloodstream.
“Was it stupid? Absolutely yes. Was I wrong? Absolutely
yes,” Hamilton said Friday. “But the people who suffer from depression know
that sometimes you make drastic decisions to make yourself feel better. Yes, I
took a substance that was on the banned list for my mental health. Did I take
it for performance enhancement? Absolutely not.”
If he is found guilty a second time of using a banned substance,
Hamilton faces at least an 8-year ban or a lifetime ban.
Hamilton, who was once thought to be as good as Lance
Armstrong, apologized for using DHEA but said he is moving forward and
concentrating on beating his depression. “I’m sorry for it. I’m ready to pay
the consequences. I’m sorry, but right now, today, it’s about moving forward for
me and dealing with my depression, trying to get better,” he added.
