France Charges Three Suspected Somali Pirates with Hijacking and False Imprisonment

The three suspected Somali pirates captured by French forces earlier this week have been charged with hijacking and false imprisonment and could face a life sentence in prison if they are convicted of the charges.

All three alleged pirates were transported to the town of Rennes after they were detained by a group of French commandos on April 10. Those commandos had launched a rescue operation to free five hostages aboard a yacht that had been hijacked by a group of pirates.

During that rescue operation two pirates were killed as was the skipper of the yacht, the Tanit. Florent Lemacon was killed by a single bullet to the head but it is not known if the gun shot came from one of the pirates or if he was caught by a bullet from one of the commandos. His wife, son and two others were rescued from the yacht unharmed.
