The
three suspected Somali pirates captured by French forces earlier this week have
been charged with hijacking and false imprisonment and could face a life
sentence in prison if they are convicted of the charges.
All
three alleged pirates were transported to the town of Rennes after they were
detained by a group of French commandos on April 10. Those commandos had
launched a rescue operation to free five hostages aboard a yacht that had been
hijacked by a group of pirates.
During
that rescue operation two pirates were killed as was the skipper of the yacht,
the Tanit. Florent Lemacon was killed by a single bullet to the head but it is
not known if the gun shot came from one of the pirates or if he was caught by a
bullet from one of the commandos. His wife, son and two others were rescued
from the yacht unharmed.
