American Ship Captain Richard Phillips Returns Home, Calls Military the Heroes

American ship captain Richard Phillips has returned to his hometown of Underhill, Vermont, five days after the U.S. military rescued him from a group of Somali pirates who had been holding him hostage in a lifeboat in the Indian Ocean.

Phillips spoke briefly to reporters; taking time to acknowledge the U.S. military for their efforts in defending American lives as well as expressing special gratitude to the Navy SEALS who were responsible for securing his freedom.

With his wife, mother and two children standing behind him Phillips said nothing of his ordeal as a hostage but instead opted to thank Maersk, his crew, the crew of the USS Bainbridge and all those who prayed for his safe return.

Phillips encouraged people to say “thank you” to the men and women serving in the military at any opportunity, telling the small crowd at the airport “they are the real heroes.”
