A Red Cross worker held hostage by Islamic rebels on the southern island of Jolo in the Philippines for three months has been rescued by police.
Andreas Notter was among the three Red Cross workers who had been taken hostage on January 15 by militants belonging to Abu Sayyaf, a group that carries close ties to al-Qaeda. Two weeks ago the rebels released Mary Jean Lacaba but the fate of the third Red Cross worker, Eugenio Vagni, remains unknown.
Details of the rescue operation have not been released but there had been reports of intense fighting between the military and Abu Sayyaf militants late Friday night near the area in which Notter was being held.
Abu Sayyaf had threatened to behead one of the three hostages by March 31 unless all military operations against them ceased and they left the island of Jolo. The government had pulled back a number of their soldiers but refused to withdraw completely fearing such a move would leave the island’s civilian population susceptible to attacks by the militants.
