U.S. President Barack Obama has called for a “new beginning” with Cuba, acknowledging the current political polices in place have failed.
Obama was addressing leaders of Latin American and Caribbean countries during the Summit of the Americas in Trinidad and Tobago on Friday when he said, “I know there is a longer journey that must be travelled to overcome decades of mistrust, but there are critical steps we can take toward a new day.”
The sentiments expressed by Obama echoed those voiced by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton who had earlier stated that the long-standing policies against Cuba had not worked. Already the U.S. has relaxed many of those policies as Cuban-Americans are now allowed to visit Cuba and can send money back to relatives.
While Obama singled out Cuba during his address at the Summit of the Americas he also expressed hope for moving forward with all nations of the Americas in “equal partnership,” pledging to “launch a new chapter of engagement that will be sustained throughout my administration.”
The Summit of the Americas, taking place in Port of Spain, will last through the weekend.
