Iran has sentenced Iranian-American journalist Roxana Saberi to eight years in prison after finding the 31-year-old guilty of spying for the United States.
Saberi’s attorney, Abdolsamad Khorramshahi, revealed the sentence shortly after it was handed down and said he would be appealing the ruling. Saberi was born in the U.S. but has lived in Iran for six years studying and writing a book.
She was arrested in January and was held in a Tehran prison up until her trial began on Monday. Originally facing charges of purchasing alcohol and working without a valid press pass the charges were inexplicably elevated to spying.
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has called the charges “baseless” and demanded Saberi’s release.
