New study shows difference in alcoholism between men and women

Alcoholism effects gender differently

A new study published in Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research suggests that alcoholism in men and women differs greatly.

It has long been thought that the effects of alcohol between genders is markedly different; however the reasons have been commonly attributed to the differences in body mass between the genders. This new study, however, points more towards genetics as an influencing factor.

“This new study offers opportunities in the field of alcoholism treatment, as well as drug addiction treatment,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “There are two specific genes, ADH1B and ALDH2, which are thought to increase the risk of alcoholism. However, one of these genes, when present in men, seems to delay the development of alcoholism. In women, this same gene may actually accelerate the onset of alcoholism. By identifying this cause and effect relationship, researchers may be better able to predict the course of alcoholism in individuals.”
