Shark Kills Man on Honeymoon in Seychelles Islands

A British woman’s honeymoon in the Seychelles islands ended in tragedy this week when her husband of just two week was killed by a shark. Authorities say 30-year-old Ian Redmond was snorkeling off Anse Lazio beach on Praslin Island Tuesday afternoon when a shark attacked him. His wife, Gemma Houghton, was tanning on the beach when she heard his screams for help. Witnesses in a boat rescued Redmond from the water and took him to shore. Redmond died of blood loss at a nearby hospital.

Tuesday’s shark attack was the second in two weeks. A French tourist was killed by a shark while snorkeling off Anse Lazio beach on August 2. In response to the attacks, Seychelles authorities have temporarily banned tourists from entered the ocean in certain areas.

Gemma paid tribute to her husband in a statement to the Press Association of Reporters on Wednesday. "I loved him so much and he was a very special husband, a thoughtful son and a devoted brother. He worked tirelessly to give us both a wonderful married life and home and I want to thank him for nine years of joy," she said.

“We were having so much fun and we were so excited about our future together. Myself, our families and our friends are devastated and shocked by what has happened. The loss of Ian has left a gaping hole in our hearts that will never be filled,” Gemma added. "He was always calm and collected, strong and brave, witty and intelligent, handsome and caring, a remarkable individual who will be deeply and sorely missed. We are privileged and proud to have shared our lives with him.”
