NBA Scores Western Conference Playoffs: Dallas Mavericks Rebound from Slow Start, Drop San Antonio Spurs in Game One

Josh Howard scored 25 points, Dirk Nowitzki added 19 points and 8 rebounds and Erick Dampier finished with 10 points and 11 boards as the Dallas Mavericks went into San Antonio and knocked off the Spurs 105-97 on Saturday to take a 1-0 lead in their best-of-seven Western Conference playoff series.

While the Spurs were forced to play without Manu Ginobili it didn’t look like they would miss their sharpshooter as they closed the opening frame on an 11-2 run to carry a 29-18 advantage into the second. That lead was extended to 13 points early in the second quarter but the Mavericks closed strong with an 11-4 run and trailed 49-44 at the break.

Dallas managed to grab a 51-49 lead early in the third after Nowitzki hit a 15-footer. While the Spurs didn’t fold the Mavs still pushed their lead to 72-63 with 3:12 left in the quarter. As they did in the first frame the Spurs then closed strong, using an 11-2 run to tie the game at 74-74 heading into the fourth. Roger mason then buried a triple as the quarter opened and the Spurs were back in front but Dallas responded and after Antoine Wright hit a three-pointer with 8:08 on the clock they were in front 86-80. Tim Duncan completed a three-point play for the Spurs to pull his club to within three only to see the Mavs go on a 9-0 run to move in front 95-83 with 4:41 left in the game. Michael Finley was able to get the Spurs back to within seven with 1:02 left in the game but Brandon Bass hit an 11-footer and then Dallas sealed the game at the free-throw line.

The Mavericks shot 53 percent from the floor and were a solid 16-17 from the foul-line in the win.
