The career of mixed martial arts fighting pioneer Chuck Liddell is apparently over after UFC president Dana White announced the 39-year-old would never fight inside the cage again.
Liddell was beaten in the first round of his fight against Mauricio Rua during Saturday night’s UFC 97 card, his fourth loss in his last five fights. The loss further confirmed that it was time for Liddell to retire after he showed little defense against the much younger Rua.
Credited with putting mixed martial arts on the map Liddell began his career 15-2 in the UFC but after a win of Tito Ortiz in December 2006 the “Ice Man” has won just once.
Following Saturday night’s loss White announced, “You're never going to see Chuck Liddell on the canvas again. It's never going to happen. It's done.” White continued, “Tonight was the end of an era. One of the greatest guys in the sport fought his last fight tonight.”
