Two Afghan soldiers died and nine others were wounded Thursday morning when a suicide bomber attempted to drive a truck laden with explosives through the main gate of a United States-run base in eastern Afghanistan. The International Security Assistance Force said the attack occurred at the base in Gardez at 6:45 a.m. local time.
Paktia provincial police chief Abdul Ghafar Sapai told AFP that "good security measures” prevented the attacker from making it to his target inside the base. Sapai said the explosives were detonated outside the first gate.
The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack. Spokesman Zabihullah Mujahed alleged “dozens” of U.S. and Afghan soldiers were killed or wounded.
