renowned theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking has been hospitalized at
Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge after experiencing trouble breathing.
Hawking
was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s Disease (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, or ALS)
more than 40 years ago but has managed to fight off the progression of the illness
much better than most.
For
the past few weeks Hawking had been battling a chest infection, a problem that
led him to cancel a planned trip to Arizona State University on April 6.
Hawking is due to step down as Cambridge University’s Lucasian Professor of
Mathematics at the end of the academic year in keeping with the school’s policy
to retire at 67.
Hawking
has been presented a number of awards and honors during is distinguished career,
most recently he was presented the Copely Medal of the Royal Society “For his
outstanding contribution to theoretical physics and theoretical cosmology.”
