The
Dallas Mavericks carried their strong end to the regular season into the first
game of the postseason as they went into San Antonio and easily handled the Spurs
105-97 on Saturday to grab a 1-0 lead in their best-of-seven playoff series.
San
Antonio was obviously missing Manu Ginobili and even with strong performances
from Tim Duncan and Tony Parker the Mavericks were too balanced for the Spurs
to handle. It was obvious that the Spurs had run out of steam as they came out
firing and held a 13-point advantage at one point but that all slipped away as
the Mavericks continued to chip away.
Josh
Howard led the Mavs with 25 points but also got solid games from Dirk Nowitzki,
19 points 8 rebounds, Erick Dampier, 10 points 11 rebounds, Brandon Bass, 14
points, and Jose Juan Barea, 13 points. It was that balance that threw off the Spurs
and if that balance exists again on Tuesday night San Antonio could be in
trouble.
The
frustrating aspect of game one for the Spurs was the fact they actually hit 47
percent from the floor and sank 11-14 from beyond the three-point line and
still lost.
Game
2 of the best-of-seven playoff series will tip off at 9;30 p.m. ET.
