At
least one person has been killed and 13 more left injured after anti-government
protests in Madagascar’s capital Antananarivo turned violent on Monday.
According
to reports police opened fire on the protesters after they began to barricade
roads. As the protesters ran to the city’s main hospital the police began to
shoot tear gas to disperse the crowds.
Protesters
had organized a march towards a courthouse as part of a demonstration against the
government’s decision to shut down two radio stations that had supported
deposed President Marc Ravalomanana.
Ravalomanana
was ousted from office last month after opposition leader Andry Rajoelina
received the backing of the military and took control of the country. Rajoelina
has said he will hold presidential elections in October 2010 but he has
received little support from the international community which has called his
actions a coup.
While
Rjoelina has issued an arrest warrant for the exiled Ravalomanana the deposed
leader has pledged to return to the country in the coming weeks.
