Stephen Hawking Hospitalized, “Very Ill”

Scientist, mathematician and author Stephen Hawking has been hospitalized and is “very ill,” according to a spokesperson for Cambridge University, where Hawking is the Lucasian Professor Mathematics.

“Professor Hawking is very ill and has been taken by ambulance to Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge,” says the university spokesperson.

No other details about Hawking’s condition were available.

The 67-year-old is one of the world’s most famous physicists. He is also a cosmologist, astronomer and mathematician.

Hawking is wheel-chair bound as he suffers from Lou Gehrig’s Disease or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). The disease is usually fatal after three years but Hawking has survived for more than 40. Although he is paralyzed and only able to move a few fingers on one hand, Hawking has said he is determined to lead a normal life.

He relies on technology for most everything, including speaking. Hawking uses a speech synthesizer with an American accent to help him talk.

"I try to lead as normal a life as possible, and not think about my condition, or regret the things it prevents me from doing, which are not that many," he wrote on his Web site.

Hawking, who is perhaps most famous for his book ‘A Brief History of Time,’ has been married and divorced twice. He has three children and one grandchild.
