Rajon Rondo had a triple-double with 19 points, 16 assists and 12 rebounds, Glen Davis added 26 points and 9 boards and Ray Allen finished with 30points including the game-winning three-pointer with two seconds left to lift the Boston Celtics past the Chicago Bulls 118-115 on Monday night to even their best-of-seven playoff series at 1-1.
Boston got some unexpected offensive help in the opening quarter as Kendrick Perkins chipped in 8 points while Glen Davis finished with 12 in the frame as the Celtics led 35-29 heading into the second. The Bulls didn’t pack it in though as they had the momentum in the second as they opened with seven straight points to grab their first lead of the game. Boston answered with an 8-0 run of their own to reclaim the lead and pushed their advantage to 52-45 with 4:00 left in the half. Chicago put it together over the final minutes of the half as they used a 16-6 run to take a 61-58 lead into the locker room.
The Celtics opened with a 12-5 spurt to grab a 70-66 lead early in the third quarter and it looked like they would try to put the Bulls away but they could never get their lead over five and late in the quarter Chicago managed to grab the lead 87-86 before Davis put the Celtics in front with a 17-footer. In the fourth quarter both teams traded the lead but it looked like the Bulls would take control after a jumper from Derrick Rose and a pair of triples from Ben Gordon put them in front 109-104 with 2:33 left in the game. Boston fought back and managed to grab a 112-111 lead on a Rondo jumper but with 46 seconds left Gordon buried a 20-foot jumper for the one-point advantage. Ray Allen then answered with a triple with 25 seconds left on the clock to give the Celtics a 115-113 but Gordon countered with a tough 16-footer to tie the game with 12 seconds left. Boston then turned to Allen who took a pass from Rondo just beyond the three-point line and fired, hitting nothing but net and leaving the Bulls with nothing but a desperation heave to end game.
After losing the battle of the boards in game one the Celtics dominated the glass on Monday, holding a 50-35 advantage including 21 offensive rebounds.
