Med Student Philip Markoff is Craigslist Killer, Police Say

Medical student Philip Markoff is set to be arraigned Tuesday on a murder charge. Markoff is accused of murdering masseuse Julissa Brisman, who was found unconscious from multiple gunshot wounds at a Boston hotel on April 14. She later died.

Authorities had dubbed Markoff the ‘Craigslist Killer’ as they believe he responded to women’s ads on Craigslist.com with the intent to rob them. It appears that Brisman’s murder initially began as a robbery. "It appears that there was a struggle between the victim and the suspect in the threshold of the hotel room immediately prior to the shooting," the Boston Police Department said in a statement.

Surveillance photos from the hotel show a man fitting Markoff’s description leaving the building. Four days before Brisman’s killing, police believe Markoff robbed another woman at gunpoint at another Boston hotel.

Authorities in Rhode Island believe the robbery of an exotic dancer at a hotel may be connected to Markoff’s case.

Markoff was under police surveillance for several days before his arrest. He was taken in to custody earlier Monday afternoon after a traffic stop.

The 22-year-old has no criminal record. He is a second-year student at Boston University School of Medicine. Markoff is engaged to fellow med student Megan McAllister. Their wedding date was set in August.
