Somali Teenager Facing Piracy Charges in U.S. Federal Court

A Somali teenager is in New York and set to appear in federal court where he will face piracy charges related to the recent attack on the Maersk Alabama and the hostage standoff involving Capt. Richard Phillips.

Abde Wale Abdul Kadhir Muse, 16, was detained by the U.S. military after the hostage standoff ended when three of the pirates holding Phillips on a lifeboat where killed by snipers. Abde Wale Abdul Kadhir Muse had been aboard the USS Bainbridge attempting to negotiate a ransom when the snipers struck and was detained after Phillips was secured.

The mother of the suspected pirate has appealed to U.S. President Barack Obama for her son’s freedom saying, “I am requesting the American government, I am requesting President Obama to release my child. He has got nothing to do with the pirates' crime.” She continued, “He is a minor. He is under-age and he has been used for this crime. I also request from the US, if they choose to put him on trial, I want them to invite me there.”

Abde Wale Abdul Kadhir Muse is due to appear in court on Tuesday afternoon.
