Fresh from his trip to Mexico, President Barack Obama traveled to Trinidad for the Summit of the Americas where he dealt with one of the hottest issues – drug wars. Currently drug trafficking has spun out of control highlighting the need for tighter control on the borders and more attention on demand reduction.
At the Summit, Mexico’s President Felipe Calderon covered this topic when he addressed the 34 heads of state attending the event. He went over measures of preventing drug consumption as well as strengthening security policies across the borders of member countries. The speech was well received and President Obama had already stated that the United States will share in the responsibility for reducing demand and keeping the borders safe.
Based on what was presented at the Summit, it seems that world leaders are recognizing that an inordinate amount of money and resources is being spent on the use, sale and transport of illegal drugs. As millions of dollars and hundreds of lives are lost in this battle in the US each year, this topic is finally becoming a primary interest for politicians in our country. The leaders at the Summit and here in the US are not only looking at the global measures needed to end trafficking, but also at implementing more effective drug rehabilitation and prevention programs to handle the addiction crisis that is present in every community in the world.
What is needed to end the supply, is to reduce the demand. This means more attention and support will need to go to the areas of drug prevention and rehabilitation. Successful rehabilitation and prevention programs such as Narconon® centers specialize in effective, long-term programs around the world.
