UN Chief Ban Ki-moon Calls Speech Delivered by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad “Very Regretful”

United Nations chief Ban Ki-moon reacted strongly to Monday’s speech delivered by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, calling the rant “very regretful” and stated that the leader had “misused” the anti-racism conference organized by the UN. The speech came on the opening day of the five-day UN conference being held in Geneva.

Ahmadinejad accused the United States and Europe of sending Jewish migrants to occupy Palestine shortly after World War II. The controversial leader said the move was done to set up a racist government that still exists today and went on to say “in fact, in compensation for the dire consequences of racism in Europe, they helped bring to power the most cruel and repressive racist regime in Palestine.”

Upon the delivery of Ahmadinejad’s speech several diplomats walked out of the building in protest while those who remained applauded.

On Tuesday Ban Ki-moon addressed the speech saying it was “very regretful that the conference was misused by the Iranian president for political purposes.” He said he spoke with Ahmadinejad prior to the speech in which he said he “had a long bilateral meeting with President Ahmadinejad and urged him to give a balanced and constructive contribution to the conference because he was the only head of state present.”
