The Portland Trail Blazers rolled through the regular season in impressive fashion and posted a 34-7 mark at home, second best in the Western Conference, but then ran into the Houston Rockets and promptly got blown out in Game 1 in their own building. Now Portland will have to rebound and figure out a way to stop Yao Ming or they could be staring at an 0-2 hole when they travel to Houston.
In their 108-81 loss on Saturday the Portland big men were exposed as Yao was a perfect 9-9 from the floor and scored 24 points while the Rockets cleaned up the glass, holding a 44-30 advantage on the boards. While Brandon Roy managed to score 21 points on 10-23 shooting the rest of the team struggled to find easy buckets with the exception of Greg Oden who finished with 15 points, many of them coming when the game was already out of hand.
Houston will be looking to bury Portland early much like they did in Game 1, taking out the crowd and forcing the Trail Blazers to play catch up. The Rockets defense was stellar on Saturday and if Portland can’t find easy transition buckets it could be another long night for Blazers fans.
As strong as Yao was for the Rockets the offense was in the hands of Aaron Brooks who scored 27 points while dishing out 7 assists, setting the table for the rest of his team which hit 58 percent from the floor.
Tip-off for Tuesday night’s game is set for 10:00 p.m. ET.
