Ricky Rubio, the Spanish point guard phenom, has decided to enter the 2009 NBA Draft, according to reports on Tuesday.
Rubio, 18, is currently under contract with Spanish club DKV Joventut through 2011. His buy-out clause with Joventut is $7.8 million. The NBA only allows a team to pay $500,000 to terminate a contract from another professional league, so the balance will fall on Rubio's shoulders.
Rubio has been rated as the No. 2 pick, behind Oklahoma's Blake Griffin, in the June 25 draft by several mock drafts and is widely considered the top international player available.
Rubio, who was a member of Spain's silver medal-winning team at the Beijing Olympics last summer, has until Sunday to register, although he can also withdraw up to 10 days before the draft at New York's Madison Square Garden.
While playing in the Olympics, he held his own against NBA All-Stars Jason Kidd and Chris Paul. His Olympic performance led to international acclaim as fans began to clamor to follow his career, stats and highlights.
Rubio, a 6-foot-3 point guard from Barcelona, has averaged 9.9 points and 5.7 assists in about 22 minutes per game this season for the club. He has been a starter in the basketball league in Europe since the age of 16. Rubio turns 19 in October, meeting the NBA's age requirement.
