A
Somali teenager accused of piracy has appeared in a U.S. federal court in New
York where the judge determined he would be tried as an adult.
Abde
Wale Abdul Kadhir Muse began crying when he learned that he would become the first
person to face piracy charges in the United States in more than a century. The
16-year-old was detained by the U.S. military following a five-day hostage situation
in the Indian Ocean involving the American shipping captain of the hijacked
Maersk Alabama.
Capt.
Richard Phillips was held hostage in a lifeboat earlier this month by a band of
pirates but was freed when military sharpshooters killed the three pirates
aboard the boat. Abde Wale Abdul Kadhir Muse had been aboard the USS Bainbridge
negotiating a ransom when his fellow pirates were killed and he was then held
and arrived in New York on Monday to face charges.
