On
Wednesday South Africans went to the polls to vote in the country’s general
elections and voter turnout has been massive as long lines at polling stations
have been a common scene.
While
the ruling ANC, led by Jacob Zuma, is widely expected to win they have had
several obstacles to overcome, chief among them is a split in the party that
led to the forming of the Congress of the People (COPE) party. That split could
cost the ANC their two-thirds majority in parliament, stripping them of the ability
to change the constitution.
Zuma
took the leadership position of the ANC after the party opted to push former
leader and ex-President Thabo Mbeki from the title. Supporters of Mbeki
splintered from the ANC and formed COPE but Mbeki has never publicly endorsed the
party.
Despite
having plenty of supporters they are many who still question Zuma’s ability to
lead and believe that if the ANC holds a two-thirds majority in parliament the
constitution could be changed significantly to protect Zuma from prosecution tied
to a corruption case.
