An
Israeli military investigation into the three-month operation in Gaza revealed
that international law had been respected and while errors were made they did
not equate to war crimes.
The
investigation supported the military’s claims that militants had been using
civilian sites as shields which led to several “unavoidable” deaths.
Palestinians have accused Israel of using indiscriminate attacks during their Gaza
campaign and said more than 1,400 people were killed, the majority being
civilians.
Israel
has discounted those allegations and placed the number of dead at 1,166 with
more than two-thirds being militants.
Several
incidents during the Israeli strikes had been labeled as war crimes by rights
groups yet the investigation ruled that no international law had been broken
and that Israel operated within the boundaries outlined under acceptable warfare.
Investigators
found that Hamas militants had deliberately used heavily populated areas inside
Gaza to house weapons and launch their own attacks, placing civilians in direct
line with Israeli strikes. In a statement released by the investigators the Israeli
military “operated in accordance with moral values and international laws of
war.” The statement also pointed out that Israel had made “an enormous effort”
to avoid civilian casualties.
Many
rights groups have dismissed the investigation’s findings and demanded further
inquiries into Israel’s actions.
