Venezuela Orders Arrest of Opposition Leader Manuel Rosales

A Venezuela court has ordered the arrest of opposition leader Manuel Rosales after he failed to appear in court to answer charges of corruption.

Rosales, a former mayor of Maracaibo, fled to Peru shortly after charges of corruption were filed last month. He has been accused of illegally obtaining about $60,000 during his time as mayor, a figure that he has not been able to explain.

As the accusations of corruption surfaced Rosales claimed he was being targeted for his political opposition to President Hugo Chavez. Rosales had run against Chavez in the 2006 elections but was badly defeated.

Rosales is said to be seeking asylum from Peruvian authorities.
