NBA Scores Western Conference Playoffs: Denver Nuggets Cruise to 2-0 Series Lead with Blow-Out Win Over New Orleans Hornets
Chauncey Billups scored 31 points, Carmelo Anthony added 22 points and 9 assists and J.R. Smith finished with 15 points as the Denver Nuggets crushed the New Orlenas Hornets 108-93 on Wednesday to take a 2-0 lead in their Western Conference playoff series.
Anthony came out firing for the Nuggets as he scored 8 of the Nuggets first 12 points as Denver held a 12-10 advantage but Rasual Butler buried a three-pointer to put the Hornets in front and after Billups completed a three-point play to put the Nuggets back in front Butler sank another triple and New Orleans was showing no signs of going easy. The Hornets were able to build a small three-point lead with 1;12 left in the quarter but a three-pointer from Billups and then a pair of free-throws from the point guard put Denver if front 27-25 at the end of the frame. New Orleans stayed close for the first six minutes of the second but an 11-0 run by Denver put them in front 45-33 and by the end of the half they carried a 52-44 lead into the break.
Chris Paul was able to close the Hornets gap to 63-58 in the opening minutes of the third but then the Nuggets used a 10-2 stretch to build a 13 point cushion and that was extended to 17 before the Hornets managed to close the frame down 81-71. Denver wasted little time burying the Hornets in the fourth as they opened with an 18-5 run to move in front 99-76 and the Hornets were done.
Both teams shot about even on the night as the Nuggets hit 50 percent from the floor while the Hornets were at 45 percent and each team hit 9-16 from beyond the three-point line but 17 turnovers by New Orleans led to 19 points Denver. The Nuggets turned the ball over just seven times and those were converted into just a single point by the Hornets.
