Academic Summer Program Introduces Foreign Language Immersion in San Diego

SuperCamp to offer Spanish and Mandarin immersion programs at CSUSM this summer

As today’s society becomes increasingly more multi-cultural and globalization becomes more and more prevalent, it is becoming more important than ever for students to learn foreign languages and experience foreign cultures at the school-age level. However, with the downtrodden economy and current international relations, many families don’t have the finances or the peace of mind to send their teens to other countries, especially where they are unfamiliar with the language or the culture.

SuperCamp, an
academic summer program designed to teach students success skills in the classroom as well as in life, has found a great way to bring foreign languages and cultures to students living in the U.S.

Beginning in the summer of 2009, SuperCamp will introduce two unique and integrated foreign language immersion programs into their already successful, 28 year, summer camp repertoire. The two 10-day learning and life skills programs for high school students will introduce
Mandarin immersion and Spanish immersion to teens who speak either of these as their first language, as well as to teens looking to further their foreign language skills and knowledge.

SuperCamp's language immersion programs give teens first hand knowledge of a second language and culture. They allow teens the opportunity to learn appreciation for other cultures from around the world without forcing their families to take on the financial burden of sending them overseas.

Contrary to popular belief, participants do not need to show mastery of a language before applying for a language immersion program. Often enough, only one or two years of study is required. Students become fluent soon enough, simply by hearing and using the language on a daily basis. All a student needs is the intellectual curiosity, motivation, and openness to learn about the world.

Both the Spanish and Mandarin immersion programs will take place at the University of California-San Marcos, in North San Diego County from June 26 through July 5.
