Davidson guard Stephen Curry announced Thursday that he will forgo his senior season and enter the 2009 NBA Draft, according to reports.
During a press conference held Thursday morning, Curry announced his decision to skip his last year of college. He also stated that he will hire an agent, which means that he cannot return to college.
"My goal, since I can remember, has been to play in the NBA," Curry said Thursday. "That has now become a viable opportunity for me. After weighing my options, I came to the conclusion that it is in my best interest to take hold of that opportunity now."
After leading the Wildcats to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament as a sophomore in 2008, Curry had an exceptional junior year. He led the nation in scoring, averaging 28.6 points in 34 games -- more than 16 points better than the team's second-leading scorer. However, he but could not guide his Davidson team to a second straight NCAA Tournament appearance.
Davidson finished this past season 27-8, including 18-2 in Southern Conference play, but lost in the semifinals of the conference tournament and received a bid to the NIT. The Wildcats lost to Saint Mary's in the second round of the NIT.
Curry, the 6-foot-3 guard, shot 45.4 percent from the field this past season and connected on 38.7 percent from three-point range. He also averaged 5.6 assists and 4.4 rebounds.
Curry's success has shed more light on mid-major programs and their stars, which include his younger brother Seth, who led all freshmen in scoring in the nation with 20.2 points per game. Seth will play in 2010-11 after his redshirt season with Dike, based on his transfer.
Curry has been projected as a late lottery pick to mid-1st round pick by several mock drafts. However, questions about his height and decision-making have offered scrutiny to his NBA success.
