Carlos Boozer had a double-double with 23 points and 22 rebounds, Ronnie Brewer added 12 points and 7 boards and Deron Williams finished with 9 assists and 13 points including a jumper with two seconds left in the game that gave the Utah Jazz an 88-86 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday and pull them to within 2-1 in their best-of-seven Western Conference playoff series.
L.A. looked comfortable early as they held a 10-7 lead following a three-pointer from Lamar Odom but the Jazz used a 12-0 run to grab control of the opening frame and with Boozer scoring 9 points they led 26-17 at the end of one. While Utah had things going on in the first the second was a different story as they went nearly five minutes without scoring as the Lakers cut their deficit to 26-25 but Boozer hit a bucket to stop the 9-0 run and while the Lakers stayed close they never could pass the Jazz and Utah had a 43-39 lead at the break.
The Lakers came out ready in the third though as Kobe Bryant buried a triple and then Odom dunked to give L.A. their first lead since the opening frame. After Deron Williams evened the score at 44-44 the Lakers went on a 10-1 run that put them in front 54-45 and extended that lead to 13 points after Trevor Ariza hit a three-pointer with 4:31 remaining in the quarter. Utah didn’t fold though and Kyle Korver hit a big three-pointer at the end of the frame to get the Jazz back to within 68-60. Los Angeles failed to build off their third quarter success in the fourth as the Jazz used a 14-2 run early to grab a 76-72 lead. After Bryant hit a pair of free-throws to tie the game at 76-76 Korver hit another big three-pointer to put the Jazz back in front and from that point on the two teams would go back and forth.
In the closing minute of the game Boozer put the Jazz in front 86-84 with a driving dunk in traffic but with 11 seconds on the clock Pau Gasol hit a bucket to even the score, setting up the game-winning shot from Williams as he hit a 15-footer over Odom to give Utah the 88-86 lead. Bryant had one more shot at giving L.A. the win but his three-pointer at the buzzer was wide and the Jazz earned their first win of the series.
Both teams struggled from the free-throw line as the Lakers hit just 16-26 while the Jazz weren’t much better at 18-28. Utah did dominate the boards though as they held a 55-40 advantage.
