Swine Flu Kills 60, Infects Hundreds in Mexico

Mexican officials have shut down schools, closed museums and warn people with flu symptoms to stay home from work after a new flu virus has killed at least 60 people and infected hundreds more.

The new strain of flu, being called the swine flu, mutated from pigs and was transmitted to humans. It contains gene sequences from North America and Eurasian swine flus, North American bird flu and North American human flu.

“We are dealing with a new flu virus that constitutes a respiratory epidemic that so far is controllable,” says Mexico’s health minister Jose Angel Cordova.

Mexican officials are urging people to avoid large crowds of people and shaking hands or giving the traditional right kiss on the cheek when greeting a woman.

Officials have promised to hold an immunization campaign in the capital soon. Most of those killed by the swine flu were young, healthy adults; something that alarms health officials. Other seasonal flus cause the deaths of infants and elderly, but pandemic flus often hit the young and healthy.
