Academic Summer Camp Teaches Students the ABCs of Success

If there is one thing that Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky, and Albert Pujols have in common, aside from their success, it’s that they know the importance of “Attitude Is Everything!” As Henry Ford says, “Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t, you’re right.” Attitude dictates outcome and we only take out of a situation what we put in.

At Quantum Learning Network’s SuperCamp, an
academic summer camp for kids and teens age 11-19, students are asked if they have ever tried something new and were convinced they wouldn’t be able to succeed. Next, they are asked if they’ve ever been challenged, yet knew that somehow they were going to be successful, and the challenge was fun. Attitude can be the deciding factor between failure and success, boredom and fun, even between staying stagnant and moving forward.

For students, attitude comes into play at school in every moment of every class. Everyone has their favorite teachers and classes, in which they are more likely to succeed. However, students also have classes and teachers they don’t like, and ‘know’ are boring. With a “This is boring” attitude, students are more likely to struggle and be less successful.

At SuperCamp’s
academic summer camps, held at seven college campuses across the US, students learn the ABCs to academic success – Attitude, Belief, and Curiosity. It’s possible for them to transform an attitude of ‘School is boring’ into ‘Learning is awesome!’ Teens learn to write a statement like that, display it in a place where they will see it whenever they study, and to constantly recite it in their minds. They are also encouraged to find a phrase that motivates them and to write it in big colorful letters in their notebook.

The desire for learning comes from curiosity. Aside from looking for personal connections and fun parts of the class topic, a student may find it valuable to ask, “Why would I want to learn what the teacher is teaching?’ The answer may be as simple as, ‘So I can pass this test.’ ‘So I can have more free time.’ ‘So I can go to college and be more successful.’ With this kind of curiosity and by understanding what’s in it for them, students will find that learning gets easier and that it’s more fun!

Since 1982, SuperCamp has graduated over 50,000 students from all 50 states and over 30 countries. With domestic programs from coast to coast on college campuses such as Cornell, Wake Forest, and Stanford Universities, SuperCamp provides a great option for students to learn valuable academic and
life skills to propel them through life and into college.
