5.9 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Virginia, DC, NYC

A 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck central Virginia Tuesday afternoon just before 2 o’clock, the U.S. Geological Survey has confirmed. The epicenter was located 4 miles south of Louisa, Virginia near the town of Mineral. The tremor was felt in New York City, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee and Washington, D.C.

USGS director Marcia McNutt warned the quake may have been a foreshock. “What the concern is, of course, is that this is a foreshock. If it’s a foreshock, then the worse is yet to come,” she said.

Several media outlets report the Pentagon and capital buildings were among the numerous buildings that have been evacuated. People in NYC poured out of apartment buildings, office buildings and other businesses during the shaking. No damages or injuries were immediately reported.
