American-Iranian Reporter Jailed in Iran on Hunger Strike

Roxana Saberi, an American-Iranian reporter who has been convicted and sentenced to eight years in a Tehran prison for espionage, is in her fifth day of a hunger strike as she continues to plead her innocence.

Saberi was convicted behind closed doors by the Revolutionary Court in Tehran after a short trial following her detention in late January for working in the country without valid press credentials. Those charges were elevated to espionage and on April 18 she was sentenced to eight years.

An appeal has been made and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has insisted she would be afforded her full rights. The U.S. State Department has called the espionage charges “baseless” and insisted the 31-year-old Saberi be freed yet Ahmadinejad has refused to intervene on her behalf.
