Iceland Holding Parliamentary Elections Following Resignation of Government

Voters in Iceland have taken to the polls to elect a new parliament following the January resignation of the center-right Independence Party government.

That government was forced out after massive street demonstrations were launched to protest the country’s handling of the economic crisis. Iceland was forced to take a $10 billion rescue package following the collapse of its banking sector and many residents pointed the finger of blame at the Independence Party for its handling of the situation.

An interim government has been in place since the resignation and early indications suggest that voters are in favor of the two parties leading that government, the Social Democratic Alliance and the Left Green Party.

A victory at the poll will present many challenges for whoever wins; chief among those problems is reestablishing a stable financial climate in the country.
