The Detroit Lions will use the overall number one pick at the 2009 NFL Draft to select Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford after the two sides came to six-year, $78 million deal that includes $41.7 million guaranteed.
Stafford’s deal is the highest in NFL history for an NFL draft pick, eclipsing the five-year, $57.5 million deal inked last year between the Miami Dolphins and Jake Long.
Detroit struck the deal late Friday night and believe Stafford will be their franchise quarterback and a key element in tuning around a franchise that posted an 0-16 record one year ago, the worst in NFL history.
As a three-year starter for the Georgia Bulldogs Stafford posted a 27-7 record while throwing 51 touchdowns and nearly 8,000 yards.
