The autopsy results are back in the death of Amy Winehouse and, as the family suspected, illegal drugs were not a factor in her death.
Ms. Winehouse’s family has stated that she had given up drugs at least three years prior to her death, but has struggled with alcohol abuse. They believe that quitting alcohol cold turkey could have caused a shock to her system, triggering fatal seizures.
“Many times, people think that they can simply stop drinking and they’ll be fine,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside
Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “While their intentions are certainly pure and honest, those intentions have often proved fatal. When a person who struggles with alcohol abuse suddenly stops consuming alcohol, their body can, indeed, go into shock and seizures can occur. That’s why it’s important to seek help when one is trying to stop habitual drinking. Effective alcohol rehab will consist of gradually and safely weaning an individual off of alcohol, helping to manage the symptoms of withdrawals and then get them to a point where they can deal with the deeper issues surrounding their alcoholism. Safety is key when helping a person conquer their alcoholism.”
