Fall semester opens up opportunity to address underage drinking

New college year creates perfect opportunity for alcohol awareness

As new freshman enter college this fall, some students have things other than studying on their mind; many can’t wait to begin partying.

“Underage drinking may be the last thing a parent wants to think about when sending their young adult off to college,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “However, it can create the perfect opportunity to open up the lines of communication and to set expectations for your child when it comes to underage drinking. For many, the college years are synonymous with endless partying, but that doesn’t have to be the case. By pulling stories from real-life tragedies involving addiction and underage alcohol consumption, parents can use this time as a teaching opportunity for their children.”

Nearly 2,000 deaths occur annually for young adults ages 18-24, due to alcohol-related unintentional injuries and, nearly 600,000 injuries occur among the same age group due to alcohol. In addition, nearly 700,000 students are assaulted as a result of excessive drinking. Nearly 100,000 students will be the victim of sexual assault or rape due to alcohol consumption. Over 30 percent of college students were classified as those who were alcohol abusers.
