Sudanese Court Sentences Rebels to Death

A Sudanese court has sentenced 11 members of the Darfur rebel group Justice and Equality Movement to death after finding the men guilty of terrorism and illegal possession of weapons.

The men were facing trial for their involvement in a May 2008 attack on Sudan’s capital Khartoum in which the fighting reached the presidential palace. At least 80 members of JEM have been sentenced to death in those attacks.

While handing down the sentence Judge Hafez Ahmed announced, “For their actions in terrorizing the people, and threatening the foundation of the state... aggressive sentences are required.”

The attack was the most significant attack launched on Khartoum by the rebels and the fighting lasted several hours before being suppressed.
