Ecuador Opens Polls for Presidential Election, Rafael Correa Expected to Win Easily

Ecuador has opened its polls for the their presidential election and incumbent Rafael Correa is expected to win easily, the only question being whether he will secure enough of a majority to avoid a second round run-off.

Correa has gained popularity during his two years as president for his social programs but critics have said his tough stance on foreign investors could further sink the country into economic troubles that would ultimately leave Ecuadoreans in a worse situation.

A significant portion of Ecuador’s exports is tied to oil and if the price of a barrel remains low Correa could see funding for his social programs shore up.

Opponents have also accused Correa of using intimidation to hold his leadership position as well as increasing the government’s control on private industry and land.
