Crew of Italian Cruise Ship Fights Off Pirate Attack Near Coast of Somalia

An Italian cruise ship with about 1,500 passengers was attacked by a gang of pirates off the coast of Somalia but the crew of the Melody managed to fend off the aggressors who eventually fled after they were unable to board the vessel.

According to the captain of the cruise ship the pirates opened fire after appearing in a speedboat and attempted to use a ladder to board the vessel but security crew sprayed water on the pirates and fired shots in the air to deter the gang.

There have been reports that many of the passengers aboard the Melody took action as well as they threw chairs at the pirates as they fired on the ship. The cruise had left South Africa and was heading to Italy when it was attacked.
