Bea Arthur, known for her impeccable comedic delivery and raspy voice as a star of the hit sitcoms “Golden Girls” and “Maude,” has died at the age of 86 after succumbing to cancer.
Arthur won Emmy Awards for her role in both “Golden Girls” and “Maude” and also collected a Tony Award for her efforts in Mame.
For Arthur her TV career began with her appearance on the classic “All in the Family” as Edith Bunker’s liberal cousin Maude. Her exchanges with the bigot Archie Bunkie quickly became a favorite for fans and producers opted to spin-off the show and give Arthur her own sit-com and in 1972 “Maude” debuted.
In 1985 Arthur again found success on the small screen as “Golden Girls” hit the air and enjoyed a long run, ending in 1992. She is survived by her two sons and two granddaughters.
