After a convincing victory during South Africa’s general elections African National Congress leader Jacob Zuma has said he is prepared to move forward and will work to unite the country as its newest president.
With a significant majority won during the elections the ANC will almost certainly be positioning Zuma as the country’s leader despite past allegations of corruption and sex scandals. Those charges of corruption were dropped just two weeks prior to South Africans taking to the polls.
Critics of Zuma feared that he would attempt to change the country’s constitution to prevent future charges from being fled but the ANC failed to secure a two-thirds majority in the elections. The party fell just short, securing 65.9% to take 264 seats in parliament.
Despite the charges and allegations Zuma discounted the negative following the election results and stated, “We have gone through a difficult period... it is now time to put it all behind us.” He went on to say the ANC would not be making any effort to change the constitution.
While the ANC won comfortably the Democratic Alliance grabbed 67 seats in parliament and the newly formed Congress of the People (COPE) will have 30 seats.
Zuma is expected to be sworn in as president in two weeks after he is elected by the new parliament.
