2009 NFL Draft Complete First Round Selections

The first round of the 2009 NFL Draft provided a few surprises on Saturday and some major moves by teams looking to find the right pieces for the upcoming NFL season. While Matthew Stafford was locked up as the overall number one selection by the Detroit Lions on Friday night and Jason Smith was a relative certainty at number two the Kansas City Chiefs shook things up a bit after taking LSU’s defensive end Tyson Jackson with the number three selection.

Following the Chiefs’ move the Seattle Seahawks were thrilled to snag Wake Forest outside linebacker Aaron Curry and then the big news hit as the Cleveland Browns traded their number five pick to the New York Jets who quickly grabbed USC’s Mark Sanchez as their franchise quarterback much to the delight of many New Yorkers attending the draft day festivities.

The Oakland Raiders stunned many as they used the number seven pick to take Maryland’s speedy wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey, leaving several in the Raider Nation to bang their head in disbelief as Michael Crabtree remained on the board. Crabtree slipped down to number ten where he was picked up by the San Francisco 49ers.

Knowshon Moreno was the first running back taken in the 2009 NFL Draft as the Georgia junior went to the Denver Broncos with the number 12 pick.

While the draft was dominated by publicity for Stafford and Sanchez Kansas State’s QB Josh Freeman found himself grabbing some headlines as he was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after they trade up with the Cleveland Browns. By the time the Browns finally used a pick they went with California’s center Alex Mack.

The next surprise of the 2009 NFL Draft came just after Mack was selected as the Minnesota Viking took Florida’s wide receiver Percy Harvin with the number 22 pick despite questions about possible disciplinary problems and a failed drug test.
