The Cheap Gourmet Offers Family Recipes to Raise Awareness for Suicide Prevention

Food bloggers unite to raise money for American Foundation for Suicide Prevention

The Cheap Gourmet founder, Kathy Browning, is offering a collection of family recipes to raise awareness about suicide prevention and support "Team Nicole" in  the 7th annual Out of the Darkness Community Walk hosted by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention in Indianapolis on September 10th.

"Cooking for Colebear" is a digital recipe booklet provided as a thank you gift to individuals making a donation to "Team Nicole." Recipes range from stuffed Cornish Game Hens to Green Pepper Steak and Caramel Apple Salad to Brownie Bites with Strawberries and Chocolate Ganache. Each recipe celebrates the life of Nicole "Colebear" Lundy, a young woman who tragically died by suicide on July 5, 2010.

Nicole's family and friends have become active participants in the Out of the Darkness Community Walks (www.outofthedarkness.org). Last year, "Team Nicole" raised $1826.00 for the Indianapolis Walk and another $235 for the Calumet Walk. This year their fundraising goal is $3,000 and they have already raised nearly $500.

In effort to help "Team Nicole" reach their goal, Browning and Nicole's mother, Tammy, have collaborated to share recipes they had cooked for Nicole over the years. "Nicole was my daughter's best friend and like a daughter to me. She loved my cooking and I have many fond memories of sharing food with her," states Browning.

As a food blogger it's natural for Browning to share recipes. "Food brings people together through good times and bad. Our hope is that the recipes provided in "Cooking for Colebear" will become family favorites for others and fill their lives with fond memories that can be shared."

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (www.afsp.org) is the leading national not-for-profit organization exclusively dedicated to understanding and preventing suicide through research, education and advocacy, and reaching out to people with depressive illnesses and those impacted by suicide. The community walks are part of AFSP's awareness strategy to help 'Silence the Stigma' of suicide and depression.

Suicide claims over 36,000 lives each year or one person every 15 minutes. Suicide doesn't discriminate and can affect anyone of any age, gender, or economic stature. It is the second leading cause of death among teens and young adults and people over the age of 65.

Out of the Darkness Community Walks help raise funds needed to better understand suicide and ways to prevent it. The goal for this year's Indianapolis walk is to raise $70,000. Donated funds will be used to implement the More Than Sad (www.MoreThanSad.org) program into Middle Schools and High Schools across the state, along with their Truth About Suicide video into every college.

The Cheap Gourmet has joined forces with food bloggers who are helping spread the word about the "Cooking for Colebear" and the Out of the Darkness Community Walks. "I know how generous and united food bloggers are and am confident they will help us surpass the goal for "Team Nicole," states Browning.
